The Club was founded on the 20th February 1973 by a group of Golden Retriever owners who felt that the time had come to form a specialist breed club.

Mrs Elma Stonex of Dorcas Golden Retrievers in U.K. agreed to become the Club's senior patron.

The first event organised by the club was a Dog Match held on Saturday, 14th April 1973 at Kelmscott Showgrounds - not a dog show but a real fun afternoon with prizes for winners. Entry fees were 50 cents for each dog entered. There were 20 entered accompanied by about 50 people

On the 28th May 1973 the Club ran a Film Night when films and slides of English Goldens taken at various shows in 1972 by Mr Bill Mitchell (Nordlys) of Victoria were shown. It was a success with 50 people attending - the club made a grand profit of 25 cents!

The first Trophy Show (Open) was held in 1974 and first Championship Show was in 1975. At this point most of the Perpetual Trophies for the Show were donated by members or local businesses. When possible, the Club has obtained the services of an overseas or interstate judge for their Championship.

The first overseas Golden Retriever specialist judge was Lucille Sawtell (Yeo) in 1978 followed by Peggy Robertson (Stolford) the following year. Contracting overseas judges has its pitfalls when illness, accident or even death prevents the chosen judge from fulfilling his/her appointment as has happened to the Club at least 5 times over the years.

The Club was incorporated in 1985.

Since that flying start in 1973 the Club has continued to thrive over the years - some years better than others. The initial focus of the Club, other than to promote our lovely breed, was to run the Club's three annual shows - A Championship Show, an Open and a Restricted Parade.

In 1991 the Club ran their first (non sanctioned) retrieving trials successfully and in 1992 were given approval to run their first two Novice and Restricted Stakes. These continued successfully for several years but have now been discontinued.

1998 was the Club’s 25th Anniversary year and was marked by a celebration for Club Members and the publication of a Year Book.

The Club now puts out 10 Newsletters a year to keep members up to date on Club events, achievements in the various aspects of Canine competition and news of members as well as publishing articles of interest. There is also several information nights organised per year for anyone interested in our breed to attend.
